Excerpt:

Marina had just dressed in her wrinkled outfit from yesterday when she heard a tap on the door. When she opened the door, she found a pink canvas beach bag with a note attached.

For Marina. From Ivy, Shelly, and Poppy at the Seabreeze Inn. Call us for breakfast delivery or join us in the dining room.

A freshly laundered, cornflower-blue cotton sundress, matching flip flops, and a white sun visor peeked from the bag. And leaning next to the doorway was a pair of crutches.

ā€œHow thoughtful,ā€ Marina said, pressing her hand against her heart. This kindness went a long way toward restoring her faith in humanity after the dreadful events of yesterday. At least she'd quit a moment before Hal could fire her, even if she beat him by only a breath.Ā

Immediately, she removed her city clothes, grateful to have a fresh change of clothing. She pulled her shoulder-length hair into a ponytail. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she slid her feet into the flip-flops, pondering her next move. Literally. Her ankle was swollen and tender to the touch. And it was a lovely shade of purple.

She mused over her choices. She could cloister herself in her room and cry until her grandmother returned. Or she could drag herself to the beach and hide under a sun visor and dark sunglasses.

Finally, she could brave the new world order and present her newly single, damaged self to other guests in the dining room.

Option A sounded appealing. She kicked off the flip-flops and flopped back onto the bed, where a dull, throbbing headache greeted her.

Marina groaned. She knew what that meant. As a morning news anchor, sheā€™d become addicted to coffee. Not just any coffee, but dark, blast-awake brews that snapped her to attention. Without it, withdrawal headaches set in fairly quickly. That was the last thing she needed now.

Throttling herself into action, she stretched for the wayward flip-flops, hopped across the floor, and opened the door again. Testing the crutches, she positioned them under her arms and swung herself forward in an awkward movement. Fortunately, the last person whoā€™d used these was as short as she was.

Above her, a dog barked, a door slammed, and footsteps clomped down the stairs.

A male voice called out. ā€œNeed some help?ā€

ā€œI need a new ankle.ā€ She raised her swollen foot.

A man about her age with a thick head of messy morning hair and a wrinkled T-shirt came into view. ā€œOuch. Sprained or broken?ā€

ā€œHow would I know? Iā€™m not a doctor.ā€ This guy was a little too happy at this hour of the morning. She winced. Her headache had just passed from the dull phase to the pounding stage. Sheā€™d slept later than usual, and now she really needed that jolt of java.

He stared at her in amusement, his blue eyes too bright for the morning. ā€œYou got me there. Need a hand with anything?ā€

ā€œNope. I got this.ā€ She couldnā€™t quite place his accent, which was an odd combination of a soft drawl and clipped words as if heā€™d lived in different areas. An urban-rural combination, she decided, what some would call citified. Working in broadcast news, she noticed these subtle things. Gritting her teeth, she set off again.

ā€œThe nameā€™s Jack,ā€ he said. ā€œHeard you arrive last night and saw the police. Were you in an accident?ā€

Did emotional wreckage count? Measuring the distance ahead, she grimaced. Another bark rang out above them.Ā ā€œDo you have a dog up there?ā€

ā€œThatā€™s Scout. Heā€™s just an overgrown puppy.ā€

Unusual name, she thought, wondering if there was a story behind it. ā€œOkay, Jack. Would you open that door for me?ā€

With only a midnight moon to light her way, Marina ducked under a wrought-iron archway covered in honeysuckle and wound her way along a pathway lined with tropical vegetation toward the old beach cottage. Breathing in the fresh sea air helped settle her tattered nerves.

When Marina reached the covered porch, she brushed sand from the high-heeled shoes she couldnā€™t wait to kick off and rang the doorbell. While she waited, she glanced around. Next to her, a wooden swing creaked in the brisk wind that carried the scent of early spring. Beyond the house, moonlight illuminated the sleepy, beachside village that hugged the Pacific Ocean in Southern California.Ā

No answer. She tapped on the beveled-glass window of the sun-bleached door and called out. ā€œGinger, itā€™s me. Marina.ā€

To one side of the wide front porch, pink bougainvillea bracts fluttered in the wind, petals scattering like confetti across the lawn. She brushed one from her silk blouse.

Marina rolled her aching shoulders. Her slim skirt felt restrictive, and she wished sheā€™d taken time to change before fleeing the city. The drive from San Francisco had been arduous, not only because of the molasses-paced traffic through Los Angeles but also due to the wounds inflicted on her heart this morning.Ā

Not to mention her professional reputation. Marina winced at the thought.

Marina ached to nestle into her grandmotherā€™s calming embraceā€”just as she and her sisters had always doneā€”and lose herself in Gingerā€™s spacious old kitchen. When Marina was younger, cooking with her grandmother usually soothed her teenage angst. Ginger would pour a glass of wine and tune in her old friend Julia Childā€™s cooking show, insisting they cook along with Julia. Usually, they were successful, though sometimes they had a major flop. Through it all, Marina thrived in the glow of Gingerā€™s unflappable approach to life.

Thinking back to those halcyon days, Marina wished sheā€™d made a different choice and spent the last twenty years pursuing another career. Could she have made a living doing what she loved?

ā€œHello? Ginger, are you there?ā€ Marina banged on the door again and then peered into a window. Inside the sprawling cottage splashed in a sunny shade of coral, comfortable, artsy furnishings were in their proper place, but there was no sign of Ginger.

Their proper places.

Marinaā€™s sisters knew their place in the world. And to the outsiders, so did Marina. Only on the inside did she often feel like sheā€™d been forced into a fancy designer shoe two sizes too small.Ā

Of the three sisters, Marina had always been the pragmatic, driven one who forged ahead and stayed the courseā€”often to her detriment. Kai, the youngest, was the free-spirited dancer who was now on tour with a musical theater company. Their middle sister, Brooke, was the homebody of the family with three rambunctious boys and a husband who was a captain in the fire department. She spent her days refereeing arguments and tending to her thriving vegetable garden.Ā

Unfortunately, Marinaā€™s life had imploded in a spectacular fashion this morning on channel KSFBā€”a San Francisco Bay area television stationā€”where sheā€™d been delivering morning news for almost two decades. Only this time, Marina had been part of the story.Ā

Sheā€™d arrived on set before dawn as she always did, ready to deliver the morning news to the early risers of San Francisco. As she passed Babe Barstow, who covered entertainment and local news, the younger woman had a strange, smug expression on her face, but Marina had become accustomed to that.Ā

Even though Marina knew Babe was angling for Marinaā€™s job, when the cameras were rolling, they were professional and friendly. At fifteen years younger than Marina, Babe still had a lot to learn. For starters, why did she insist on using her cutesy nickname when she wanted to be taken seriously as a news anchor?Ā

While Marina was reviewing her notes, Babe was covering the lighter news. ā€œLulu Godiva, whose recent song, Love Me in the Afternoon, hit the top of the charts, recently revealed the story behind the tune, saying a San Francisco man inspired it.ā€ Babe paused dramatically. ā€œAnd itā€™s none other than our local architect to the stars, Grady Ashworth, who designed Luluā€™s getaway in Napa Valley. The singer spilled the story when questioned about her dazzling engagement ring this weekend.ā€

Babe swung back to Marina with a smirk of satisfaction. ā€œWhat do you think about that, Marina?ā€

As Babe delivered the coup de grace, the camera shifted back to Marina.

ā€œWell, I donā€™t think Gradyā€¦could mean thatā€¦ā€ Marina blurted out a mishmash of unintelligible words, adding, ā€œThis isnā€™t a gossip show, Babe, and I donā€™t think our viewers are interested in who Grady Ashworth is dating.ā€

ā€œYouā€™re missing the point,ā€ Babe said coolly. ā€œLulu Godiva is a gorgeous, successful star. Lucky Grady, right?ā€

Frantically, Marina tried to blink away the hot, angry tears welling in her eyes. She waved the camera away, though the operator kept rolling, seemingly oblivious to her distress. Her skin felt hot and prickly, and her face was probably turning bright red. She swiveled her chair back with force to finish the news, trying to conceal a quick brush of tears, but somehow her heel snagged on a cord and jerked her from her chair. A cry escaped her lips.

ā€œBack to you, Marina, for the rest of the morningā€™s news,ā€ Babe said. ā€œMarina?ā€

While Marina was gripping the desk to haul herself up, the floor director was barking orders and insults through her earpiece.Ā

By then, Babe was smoothly taking over. ā€œWhile Marina is out of commission, letā€™s go on to other entertainment news.ā€

When they cut to commercial, their boss burst out. ā€œWhat just happened?ā€ Hal demanded. ā€œMoore, youā€”of all peopleā€”know better than to fall apart on the air.ā€

ā€œBabe set me up,ā€ Marina said, though she knew that was a thin excuse. ā€œShe could have come to me any time before the show with that information to prepare me.ā€

ā€œYouā€™re a pro, Moore,ā€ Hal shot back. ā€œOr you were. The fact is, ratings are down, and itā€™s time we had a fresh face.ā€

Marina gaped at him, slowly comprehending what he was saying. ā€œIt wonā€™t happen again,ā€ she said, reining in her anger. Sheā€™d always had the support of her old boss, but when the station was acquired three years ago, Hal Reilly, son of the billionaire media conglomerate owner, was brought in.

Hal was in his late twenties and dangerously hip. His father had charged him with changing the format from news to anything that drove ratings. That meant more controversy and charged opinions on the air.Ā

Marina wasnā€™t comfortable with this approachā€”or with Hal. Sheā€™d managed to ignore his disgusting double entendre remarks and dodge his wandering hands, but she wasnā€™t so sure about Babe.Ā

A knowing look passed between Hal and Babe.

With an exasperated huff, Hal slid a hand over his shaved head and removed his designer glasses. ā€œLook, Moore, I hate to do this to you, butā€”ā€

Marina knew Hal was relishing this. She quickly cut in. ā€œIā€™m giving my official notice.ā€ Marina wasnā€™t going to plead for her job in front of Babe and the entire crew. ā€œIā€™ll gather my belongings and leave.ā€

And bang, just like that, at forty-five sheā€™d lost her job and fiancĆ© in less than five minutes. Probably some sort of record, she thought ruefully. Sheā€™d call her agent tomorrow, but for now, all she wanted to do was sleep and forget today had ever happened.
